Open-Sided MRI at Spine West

  • Reduces claustrophobia and anxiety so often caused by “tunnel-like” machines

  • Uses magnets with no risk of radiation

  • A safe, non-invasive way to examine for orthopedic issues (spine, joints, etc.)

  • Can be used with metal joint replacements and spine fusion hardware

  • Other metal devices (cardiac pacers, brain or spinal implants) may need special screening

  • NOTE: Our MRI is designed for orthopedics. It is not well-suited for scanning the abdomen, chest or head

What to Expect

A technologist will position you comfortably on the table and “slide” you into the magnet. Only the body part being imaged will be in the magnet opening, the rest of your body will remain outside the magnet.

During the scan, you may hear tapping and other noises produced from the magnets. You may want to wear earplugs, which we can provide.

The time “in the magnet” depends on the type of study performed.

The technologist is always immediately available throughout the exam.

How to Prepare

You can eat, drink, and take regularly prescribed medications prior to the exam.

Bring comfortable clothing (without any metal parts!) like elastic shorts or sweats (with no metal ringlets).

You may be asked to change into a hospital gown or paper shorts to avoid interference from metal in zippers, fasteners, jewelry, etc.
